"15/8 would be right if one of the men on the ace was on the three instead. I don't really understand why it's so bad -- I assume that's what you played".
Liability can often be a multi-faceted aregument.
15/8 is the wrong idea IMO, because it attacks just the rearmost blot. With 6's denied the oppon 5's become the next crucial number for her to escape with. 15/8 gives the oppon 4's & 5's; 4's to hit and 5's to escape leaving you with nothing if she hits and at best a double indirect shot if she doesn't. I'd guess that you think stepping out to white's bar or 17pt is putting yourself in harms way resulting in a diluted attack with greater liability.
In this case, its our forwardmost blot that holds the greater liability for us. Putting it on the 8pt accenuates that liability.
Concept: Attack both blots!!! The idea here, is a "concentrated attack" that gives white double trouble. Now, instead of one problem to negotiate she has two. 21/18 15/11 is a subtle and much more potent attack than 15/8.
With the 3pt filled, 15/8 may well be a significant blunder IMO.
