I think Casper is right (as I think he implies) that the 17 point is not very important as a final landing spot, but it does block 65 13/2* and 55 13/8(2) X/X, and lets Blue move from either point (for instance to hit in Blue's own outfield) and keep a point in contact with the back checker. I suppose the 16 point does give slightly better board coverage, but I also think 6/4 is a small improvement. So ... 18/17 6/4.
