41S-54

Forget about what move is "best". The point is that hitting is a strong play. And, the reason it is strong is because Black is poised to make a point on almost any roll. I believe this generic topic was covered with a similar position in Nack and Paul's book although I don't have the reference handy.
Look at the rollout you just did - 21S-43 (X vs Z). Compare this with 41S-43 (X vs Z). X is clear after 41S compared to the virtual tie after 21S. The difference is the value of the tempo hit with the blot on the nine versus its value with the blot on the eleven. Checking 31S-43 should also help to illustrate this fundamental. The value of the tempo hit is low compared to 41S-43X. Look at all three of these and then reread Nack and Paul's explanation. Then come back to your original position and it should be relatively clear that hitting is imperative.
