I wished to repeat this comment by David Rockwell because I thought it useful and had not seen it before:
However, clearing the six point leaves four checkers on the three point. This is to be avoided whenever possible. Blue wants to hold as many points as he can as long as possible. Stacks of four make this more difficult.
Here is a rollout of David's altered position with the spare on the 2 point instead of the 3 point:
