Great problem, Miran! I didn't respond earlier because I had no clue.

Looking at the rollout information, I suspect that one point in favor of anchoring is that it makes quite a few of White's rolls play more awkwardly. Her 5's, for instance, aren't so great. If Blue leaves two blots in White's home board, then in the worst case, White can blast away at the blots and not worry too much about getting hit back because she can always fall back on a backgame. But if Blue anchors then it's harder for White to play a two-way game like that.

To test the theory that anchoring is strategically a good idea in "this sort of position," I'd try slightly varying the arrangement of the White checkers on White's side of the board, and also perhaps varying the position of Blue's spares on his four-prime. Does the bot still anchor? What happens if you change the roll to 43? What if you move White's 4pt to her 5pt and change the roll to 41? Etc. Also, check the temperature map (or whatever XG calls it): does White blast away at Blue's blots if Blue doesn't anchor?
