I'd make the ace in both cases. In the first, to avoid opp making another point next turn and because 13/7(3) 24/18 leaves too many shots.
In the second because we want to double next turn, and making the ace eliminates one shot at the blot on the 9 (63 and 54 vs 53, 62 and 44), and gives more return hits in case of a hit (plus it keeps the midpoint which helps the hit blot). Making the ace also forces the blue blot forward, but that may not be relevant as we double in any case. If I recall correctly, in the last position Bill played the 66 positionally and was hit by a 44.
