A tale of two elo's

Probably the best thing to do is have a database that tracks several parameters (elo, points, W-L, events participated in, points/event, XG-PR). At a minimum the data would be useful at Giants voting time. Ideally one of the parameters ... or a combination ... could become the basis for an official world ranking.

I'm not a fan of elo. I own two elo's ... both on the same system, Pogo. One is 1721; the other is 6008. The 1721 is based exclusively on tournament play. I have no control over who I play. The 6008 was based one-on-one play where I could select or reject who I played. Some of the people I played had attained artificially high elo's through unethical means ... establishing mutiple userids and playing one against the other. Another deficiency with elo is that there is no time erosion factor. I haven't played Pogo one-on-one backgammon since 2005, yet my 6008 is still on their books.

My personal favorite for a world ranking data element is average points/event where events in the current year count 5, last year count 4, previous year count 3, etc. I like the ABT points system as it awards points based on attendance. A tournament with 100 entrants awards 100 total points; a tournament with 20 entrants awards 20. It's a voting system where the people vote on which tournaments should weigh more in the world ranking.
