The contrast between the two positions still surprises me. If you or Paul ever gets around to writing about 41, this would seem to be an excellent example to include.

Seriously, though, the extra 13/8 has two related effects. The first (already mentioned) is the reduction of the midpoint from five to four checkers. The second effect is that the extra 8pt checker strengthens the blitz variations. It is the combination of both effects that explain the large K/H swing between the 54S-41H and 51S-54S-41H positions.
