I dont think any book in chess takes you from not knowing much to essentially a decent player. To me thats what Magriel book does it takes your from nothing to a decent intermediate if you grasp most of it. However once you become a reasonably decent chess player I would say around 1000-1200 Uscf rating strength I would suggest reading The Amatuers Mind than once you get to around 1400 strength I would suggest Reassess Your Chess.
