With 4 checkers on the 1 and 2 points the variability in number of rolls to bearoff is smaller than usual for the opponent which hurts him trailing the race.

I see this factor ignored all the time. To get an idea to how large the effect is give opponent a position with same EPC but no checkers on ace or 2 points.
