On an historical note, I'd say the "bot era" began in 1991.
Date Program Notes 1987 Spinnaker Championship Backgammon Not a neural net. Not bad, for its time. Runs on DOS. Downloadable from http://www.the-underdogs.info 1989 NeuroGammon A TD-Gammon precursor, by Gerry Tesauro. 1991 TD-Gammon Released for IBM's OS2/Warp operating system. "'tesauro' was the FIBS incarnation of TD Gammon, the first neural net backgammon program, trained partly by pubeval, a TD-gammon sparring partner." 1991 Expert Backgammon Not a neural net, but it did rollouts. Originally for the Mac, a PC version was released in 1993. "Special notice for those who have limited space on your hard drive: The size of the program is over 400KB." -- Butch Meese, 1993.
"Expert Backgammon and its rollouts were significant factors in my winning the 1992 U.S. Open." -- Ed O'Laughlin, 1992 U.S. Open Backgammon Champion.
1994 JellyFish Version 3.0 of Fredrik Dahl's sea creature was released in 1997. 1998 Snowie Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Doc, Happy, Bashful and Grumpy. 1998 Abbott A FIBS bot by Gary Wong that began running on FIBS in January 1998. Based on pubeval. "After its debut, Abbott dropped to a 1300 rating on FIBS, similar to pubeval's rating. The initial version performed no lookahead, but since this was added, its rating has risen to the low 1500s. As far as I know, Abbott is the first variant of pubeval that plays on FIBS using lookahead." 1998 Costello A FIBS bot by Gary Wong that began running on FIBS in October 1998. "Costello is Gary's second FIBS bot and builds on the work he put into Abbott, itself based on pubeval. Early indications (after around 300 games) are that Costello plays a stronger game than Abbott." 1999 GNU Backgammon "[gnu] by Gary Wong began running on FIBS in May 1999. It seems to be the next iteration of Gary's Abbott and Costello bots." 1999 mgnutest Created by Joseph Heled, ran on FIBS beginning "... late-1999. It is based on the GNU Backgammon code and was the first GNU Backgammon-based bot to play multiple-point matches. According to Joseph, mgnutest uses 0-ply (no lookahead). Despite this, it has attained a FIBS rating of around 1900, putting it in the top flight of bots, and providing evidence of the strength of the GNU Backgammon evaluator. Running on a faster machine, Joseph estimates it would be rated in the high 1900s." 1999 mpgnu Created by Joern Thyssen, ran on FIBS beginning February 2000. "... based on the GNU Backgammon code and is among the first GNU Backgammon-based bots to play multiple-point matches. Checker play decisions are made using 1-ply lookahead (i.e. static evaluation plus opponent's responses) and cubing decisions are made using 2-ply lookahead." Unattributed quotations are from the backgammon pages at www.netadelica.com.
