Arriving Soon: Software Inputting Match Videos Into XG Without Transcription

This afternoon in Monte Carlo I had a very interesting conversation with a serious gentleman who has been in the software development business for decades. He does not want his name released for a few weeks, so I will refer to him as USD (unnamed software developer).
USD has been working on an iPhone app that takes a photo of a backgammon position and determines its unique position number so that it can be easily and directly inputted into GNU or XG. He has completed 90% of the work on this project.
I then asked the obvious question, "Can and will you produce software that creates an sgg file from a match video, usable by XG for match analysis?" USD told me he hopes to complete this project by the end of the year.
I called Perry and told him the news. The implications are enormous. For individuals, a match can be analyzed instantaneously after it has been completed. No more boring tedious work of transcribing matches.
For the backgammon community, this means that for the first time in the history of the universe, we will soon be able to compile enough data to have a meaningful PR ranking list based on live play. Obviously, there are many issues to be considered and many decisions to be made to ensure the integrity of the system. One must not be allowed to cherry pick only his best matches.
The timing is coincidental. Xavier, the creator of XG, wrote me on July 6, "For the future of XG, first I will release in a few weeks the iPhone/iPad version (XG Mobile)."
Very soon, you will be able to take a photo of a position and immediately get the XG evaluation on your iPhone. Clearly, there will have to be a new rule preventing iPhone photographing of positions during a match.
USD said he would provide more details within a couple of months.
