I agree with benf. Even if you have software that can recognize a clean, still photo of a backgammon board and correctly figure out the position (and even this is not trivial for certain situations, notably when the player stacks checkers—sometimes it's even difficult or impossible even for a human being to handle such situations), it's a HUGE step from that to automatic processing of a video file.

I can sort of believe that someone might be able to put something together that is about 80% accurate. But then you'd still need a human being to go through the file and clean it up, so I'm not sure how much labor this would really save.
