Well mr. rant, I guess it's because you like to see the "do or die", "make it or break it", the sudden turn-arounds, etc.
You want to see some drama, more than you want to see some good bakcgammon, or a player having a small edge grind that edge into a real advantage over a string or games, getting a feel for your opponent.
You probably never watch the first quarters of a basket or football game? And when watching poker you prefer the "all-ins" at the final table, not the finesse plays that brought the players there over the course of 10-20 hours of grinding good poker?
Now, back to backgammon. What will you miss if you go for "best of x to short" matches?
You certainly won't see many 8 cubes! In fact, you will see fewer redoubles. I love to see those 8 balls once in a while. Furthermore you will never see true difficult / skewed MET situations. You will never see a player trailing a match by much, and you won't get to the true difficult decisions where even a small lead in a long match, can affect large cube decisions by a mile.
I prefer, as Tim, to keep long matches in important tournament. Both as a player and as a spectator.
Having said that, I acknowledge the "sprint" formats will be better suited for broadcasting to an audience that is not bg-experts.
