Dice lands on corner - die/dice

My Chambers dictionary ca. 1972 gives die as the singular of dice, but also dice. I would say that in England dice is replacing die in colloquial usage.
Dice as a game I would take to refer to some 18th century gambling game. As in "playing at tables and dice" (I made that quote up).
Why did this thread mutate from a question of backgammon rules into English usage.
