Dice lands on corner - die/dice

Unfortunately I checked a real dictionary and its publisher, Oxford University Press, said, "in modern standard English dice is both the singular and the plural." But I think that statement is descriptive, not prescriptive, and I have no idea how true it is. One die, two dice, in my book. Julius Caesar did not say "The dice is cast." I mean, if he had spoken in English, instead of saying "Ἀνερρίφθω κύβος."
