Humans vs. bots

It may help to compare with a couple of other known examples.
Computers driving cars, for example. Computers were driving cars on the freeway 20 years ago. They're still not driving cars without human supervision now. We're getting closer, of course.
Computers playing chess. At every stage along the way there were people predicting that the day when computers would outplay the top humans was just around the corner. It's happened now, of course.
I could list numerous other examples. Basically, these sorts of things do eventually happen. But the "last mile" is much longer than the confident optimists predict. When it's about to happen, it's obvious to everyone that it's about to happen. Before that, not so much.
I'd say that image processing of backgammon matches is about where computer driving was about 5 to 10 years ago. It'll be good enough for an 80% solution. That's a lot better than nothing, but we're not on the brink of a project like Paul Weaver was fantasizing.
