Ohhh yes, the technology needed to read a backgammon position is about 5-10 years more complex than building an autonomous system for driving a car!

OK, maybe that was not what you were trying to say.

As for backgammon, there's nothing preventing a solution to this problem - except for the right combination of time, talent and motivation. The technology needed is there.

But maybe, what we need, is a "scanner" like the one on top of the Google+ car:

Anyway, it's not like we're discussing IBM's jeopardy playing Watson or something of that magnitude.

You might very well be right though, that 5-10 will pass and we still have nothing, but it will for other reasons than this being technically not doable.
