I agree with what you say, Tom. The assumptions I've been making are based on Paul's initial post in this thread. He was talking about automatic transcription of live matches on a massive scale. I take that to mean that you don't get to control the environment. Tournaments get held, people play the way they usually play, and your program has to deal with whatever footage they hand you.

By the way, Henrik scoffed at the comparison with computer driving. I actually don't think that from a technical point of view, the problems are all that dissimilar. 95% of the time spent driving deals with very stereotyped tasks. It's the last 5% that is difficult, and that has taken decades of research. Of course in the case of driving, the consequences of failure are far more serious, and there are a lot of psychological and legal issues at stake as well, so computer drivers won't get fielded until the technology is nearly perfect (or at least perceived to be so). In backgammon, there's no comparable reason not to field an 80% system, and I can believe that that might happen soon. I'm only arguing that the near-perfect solution needed to realize Paul's dream isn't on the horizon yet.
