Bar codes?

Some tournaments (Monte Carlo?) supply the boards. If you have access to the boards ahead of time, here is another idea:

Paint bar codes on the checkers in a color that is invisible to human eyes but visible to the video camera. For example, the white checkers could be labeled W1, W2, W3, etc., the black checkers B1, B2, B3, etc. Put bar codes on the faces of the dice too.

On postprocessing, filter out everything but the special color used for the bar codes. There probably already exists software that can scan a picture, find every bar code in it, read the bar codes, and return their location in the picture. That pretty well gives you everything you need to know. Occasionally a bar code won't be found because another checker is sitting on top of it, but you should be able to infer where the missing checker is.
