Long (rambling) story

Interesting about Robertie. He doesn't appear to rank as highly on the Greatest list as I would have thought given how influential he must have been so I'm guessing it's stories like this that are the reason. That said, I didn't first start seriously studying the game until I came across his books. I'm sure there are some very significant errors but it did point out some serious flaws in my game (not aggressive enough and a tendency to wait too long to get my back checkers moving). That said, and to your point with Stick, it wouldn't have been so bad learning some bad habits from him if the bot era hadn't been right around the corner. Everyone doing the same bad things makes it easier to deal with then finding out definitively that some of what you've learned is not only wrong but very wrong and with newer players taking advantage of this.
My only interesting addition to all this is a friend of mine who is a pretty good player. He also read Robertie and came to distrust him so much that he's become suspicious of anything that looks even vaguely Robertie-like. This leads him to some bad plays especially once I figured out how to take advantage of the situation e.g., what I call "slotle" plays. That is where I slot and then double next turn and he's so freaked by the slot that he takes doubles he shouldn't.
