I don't think that's true for the leader's redouble at 3a4a.

Winning a single gives the leader 82% MWC.
Winning a gammon gives the leader 100% MWC.
Losing a single gives the leader 40% MWC.

So the leader's gammon value on a 2-cube is 18/42 or 0.43, which is reduced. Thus, killing your gammons isn't especially costly.

Maybe you're confusing this with initial cubes at 3a6a/3a7a etc.? Even then, your reluctance to turn the cube typically depends more on the fear of your opponent winning a redoubled gammon than on the fear of reducing the value of your own gammons (though the latter is a factor to consider).
