8/4(2) 6/2(2) is great - but then 44 is a great roll. The problem with the play is that it is a bit committal - you create a board, good for hitting and blitzing, but it has gaps in it, so it is not so good for priming. So it looks like making two inner points is a play with mainly tactical advantages.

Now compare 13/9(2) 24/20(2). After the roll, we are 13 pips up, so getting the back checkers moving should be good, it is one of your strategic priorities while ahead in the race. It also makes an offensive point, and brings more material, which is good for priming and for blitzing, should we get the opportunity. It also leaves no blots and shots. with is another plus. It leaves a strong position that is suitable for many different game plans.

After 8/4(2) 6/2(2), your opp basically wants to make an anchor and then to build a prime. If that succeeds, the advantage will swing the other side. After 13/9(2) 24/20(2), it is less clear what your opp wants, the advantage is more persistent. Probably your opp wants to make a high anchor and then roll doubles of his own, but it is more of a struggle to catch up. In comparison, building two inner points bets a lot on getting a dance. And note that while the resulting cube after a dance is OK, it is not a big winner.
