Casper's answer is good, but I'd supplement it with a general comment. In the opening, using a large doublet to blitz tend to win a lot of gammons, but if there's an alternative play that safely makes some strong points and/or escapes your back checkers, then the blitz will probably not win as many games as the solid play. The reason is that if the blitz fails then your position will often be somewhat messy and difficult to clean up, with points made deeper than you would like, blots scattered around, and stragglers in your opponent's home board.
At a match score where gammons are elevated in value, 8/4(2) 6/2*(2) can be the correct response to 24/23 13/11. At a match score where gammons are diminished in value, 8/4(2) 6/2*(2) may be an even bigger blunder than it is for a money game.
I don't think that there's any easy way to figure out by "pure thought" which way the gammon/win tradeoff should go in a money game. The computer's verdict is based on a huge amount of experimental data.
