It's not 1296. For starters, there are only 15 opening rolls. Some of them are plausibly played in more than one way, but the first factor is still only about 25–30. One the second roll there are a lot of rolls that are obvious, so you really need to learn only a couple hundred positions to master the second roll, at least for money games. Not trivial, but not outrageous either. Also, you get quite a lot of mileage out of these beyond the second roll if you try to understand why each play is what it is.

Mastering all third-roll positions, on the other hand, requires some serious effort that almost all players would be better off spending in other ways.
