Structuring it as a workbook would not endear me to the vast majority of my readers and so I do not intend to change the style.

I understand that, but the only change I'm advocating is to put the match score and who's on roll on the diagram. That's all. Is that really a major change in style that will alienate the vast majority of your readers? Hard for me to believe.
