Live vs. online play

Live = tournaments, you play to win/progress.
Online play = practice, you play to polish your game. Plus you're often less aware who's sitting next to you, and matches are shorter giving you less information about your opponent and less incentive to adjust. You might also pay less attention to opponents play when playing online, since you tend to play faster, are 100% certain opponent doesn't move illegal, and you can do other things at the same time (have conversations, calls, watch TV, etc.).
You can sort of compare it to multi-tabling in online poker playing abc-like, vs. live play with full attention to all opponents and hands you're involved in yourself.

That said, I don't understand why you wouldn't sometimes mix in adjusted play online, for the practice of it, playing people you know in advance!!
