>> In any sport it's painful to watch a champion/legend go out defeated and broken. There are literally only days left in his swimming career. IMO, the big drama now is Phelps vs. Phelps. And I'm pretty sure he knows it.

I always think of Sergey Bubka when this topic is brought up.

He was so dominant that he got greedy with the price money and fame. Not that you can blame him, but for several years, he handpicked tournaments that would pay high prices for new world records, and then he beat his own world record by just 1 cm (less than half an inch)!

Now, what happened was that his form suddenly declined, he got minor injuries, and he went for two years without beating his own WR, until he then improved it just one last time.

His record still stand, almost 20 years later, but no-one is in doubt, that he could have cleared MUCH MORE than what he did. It was rumored that he jumped around 10 cm higher at practice at some point, and replays from some of his jumps from competition, shows that he cleared the bar with a huge margin to spare.

I wonder how he will feel about this, when in some years another pole vaulter beats his record by an inch, and then officially becomes the "best ever" at pole vaulting.

BTW: Bubka got to beat the world record some 30-35 times!!
