Bubka could have put in a WR that was out of this world, he didn't because he wanted to beat his own WR as many times as possible... Then his career was suddenly past it's peak, and he never got to show his full potential.

However, you are correct that what he did get to show, is still beyond everybody's reach here even 20 years later.

I read that his average speed in his "run in" was almost the same as the average speed of the 100 meter sprinters (just around 10 m/s). Though not as long, it's still incredible, since he would be running with the pole!
