Mike, my understanding is that when setting the Gnubg truncation depth for a truncated rollout of a checker play, the first checker play is ply "1" -- and that plus the following 6 makes 7 "ply" in all.

You can evaluate a position with 0-ply, but you can't run a Gnubg truncated rollout with ply "0." Try it: Open the Rollouts / Settings window, check the "Truncate Rollouts" checkbox and set "Truncate at ply" to "0." Close the window and reopen it. Your check box will be unchecked, and the "truncate at ply" will be greyed out.

In other words, Gnubg doesn't count "ply" the same way for truncation depth and for evaluation/analysis depth. Or so it seems.
