Rollout surprise

Right, Any time your opponent can kill gammons by turning the cube, that is a red flag to watch out for. And, of course, there are more hit-and-cover rolls after hitting loose on the deuce point (11 22 24 26 as opposed to just 34 36), and opponent will be much more likely to cube if you have 2 men back as opposed to just one man back. Obviously you don't run at gammon go or at many other scores where you are trailing.
The other side to that story is that you don't actually need to play the game until the end, getting to a position where you can just cash is good enough. Of course, winning a gammon is better than cashing, but you still are far from a favorite to win a G yet, and cashing in a roll or two is a very reasonable scenario. And it should be clear that running is better than attacking for reaching a position where you want to double as the leader.
