Players didn't understand this game back then as well as they do now. Nowadays we realize that one play to provoke an exchange of hits later or that our opp may just blot anyhow and be hit when we have a stronger forward position. Back then, the emphesis (overdone) was on immediately trying to recapture the escaped back checker.
