Timothy: Here, there's no hit available, but paying now could be considered the "bold" play since it gives the opponent more shots.

I prefer to think of this in terms of the potential for having two blots hit. This is the possibility discussed by Daniel. Because it minimizes the chance of ever having two checkers closed out, paying now is the safe play.
