One should undoubtably trust your great experience in this area, that the rake Stephen applied was realistic in covering costs and making a moderate profit (which certainly no one should begrudge an organiser). I feel it was worth speculating as to why interest in the event didn't take off as he had hoped.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about players bitching about rakes. Such players are really complaining about having freedom of choice, which in some societies is sadly very limited, of course. If we don't like the conditions of entry of a tournament we can vote with our wallets. It's supply and demand. Ultimately, I suppose, all business ventures succeed or fail on this basis.
