I couldnt agree more. For an event like this to work, it must get a big ball rolling and early. I had heard about the event on these forums, but nowhere else.
I think part of the reason the bahamas was so successful was the opportunity to get into it through partygammon. That alone is worth its weight in gold. Any super-large event must have a huge amount of backing from a publicity standpoint, and it has to have the hype attached to it too. People have to be talking about it, widely. Here in the US, I didnt hear any buzz about it, not even from the large international attendance at Rory's Chicago tournament (end of May 2012). If the players willing to travel to Chicago for that arent talking about it, then you really have a problem.
I applaud the efforts that Pearson has made, however, in my humble opinion, they werent enough. The publicity has to be huge, the interest has to be there, the advertising must be there, and ultimately, I dont think that one person can really do this properly without being on it full time.
Others have mentioned the 7% rake. I dont get it, that seems reasonable to me. Maybe charging it in the form of a registration fee would be better - however, I dont know the facts, so will not comment any further on that.
Good Try, Pearson. Dont give it up entirely, next time, get more people committed and actually doing something.
