I think the emergence of Extremegammon and the new emphasis on pr and playing the "right move" has made backgammon more tense and a bit less fun. For some I'm sure it is a driving force in making them much better players but for the average player I'm not sure backgammon will necessarily benefit from this. Clearly the best backgammon is being played right now but I think it was probably more fun playing back when nobody was totally sure about the "right move."
