What Stick said. Let me add that 5/off creates what is called double jeopardy: first you have the immediate shots from two high numbers (non doublets), then if you roll high + small, you will again face the danger of a high die combined with an ace. If you play 5/2 4/2, you only have the latter danger (high die and an ace), so that would be 'single jeopardy' (although that term is not very common).

Here it is clear, but often avoiding double jeopardy is best to avoid leaving shots, even if the immediate number of shots is less from leaving three checkers on the highest point is less than from stripping it.
