Pressure in Backgammon

I'm not sure I understand the connection you're drawing between "performance" and "pressure." Perhaps I don't understand what you mean by "performance."
In backgammon, everyone occasionally makes mistakes where they later wonder, "What on earth could I possibly have been thinking?!" Why do these mistakes happen? Isn't avoiding such mistakes a kind of "performance"? It seems pretty similar to sports performance to me. Sports are more physical, of course, but mental activity ultimately rests on the physical performance of our brains, and sports also have a large mental component, so I don't see where you're drawing a distinction.
