Pittsburgh Director Steve Hast: JASON ,Based on the More Swiss Format and allowing 2 hr and 10 min per round of 9 pts., Butch Meese and I feel that Clocks do not have to be used. If , I as director find any matches proceeding too slowly i will put a clock on it..Over 17 yrs I rarely had to do so. I have a reputation for running tournaments that end on time even when there are 80 players in an event and we only had Sat/Sun to complete the tourney.. It is entirely YOUR choice as to attending or not...I respect that..
Hi Steve -- I have no doubts you are going to have an excellent tournament with a great turnout.
You, like many other people, assume that my motivation for wanting to play with clocks is fueled primarily by a fear of slow play. That assumption is completely false. I prefer to play with clocks because the mechanics of the game are vastly improved. The regulation of the length of the match is a happy side benefit.
ALL matches, when clocked, benefit from the improved mechanics. ONLY A FEW matches require a clock to regulate the pace of play. Most players play at a reasonable pace.
Please, all you anti-clock folks, make sure you understand the motivations behind the desire to use clocks. I do not speak for the entire pro-clock contingent, but many do think like I do.
All my best to you, Steve, as you run your tournament in Pittsburgh. I hope you have a great turnout, both local and travelers. Don't worry about me... I'm just one guy, and my absence is basically negligible in your overall attendance.
