bearing in problem

After you play your 32, distinguish between two cases: opp rolls a 6 and runs, or opp does not run (because of a failure to roll a 6 or a decision not to run with a 6-low - whether staying is correct does not matter much in this particular case).
In the first case, having taken off the checker is slightly more efficient for the race, so you gain a bit from your play, but it is not a huge gain.
In the second case, having all these builders mean many more numbers that point on white and become virtually gin; additionally, there are rolls that could be used for pick-and-off, which gain a lot in the race. These favorable sequences for 8/5 6/4 occur more often, and the swing involved is much larger, so 8/5 6/4 it is.
