candidate plays: 1(2), 5* 13, 5* 8. making the 1 point looks best at 0 ply, but dynamically it kills a checker and will likely force white to open up first. the hitting moves have the immediate weakness that they can be hit back immediately and brown's board is strong enough to decide the game. unless brown hits and covers or hits 2(too good), he'll likely be able to claim with the cube. it's almost always right in these situations (bar and mid holding games) the mid is given up before the opp bar. so, i'd go with 5* 8 increasing the chance of making the 5 if not immediately hit.
