I'd make the 18pt here. This puts you into a mutual holding game where the race is even and you have the more advanced anchor. You do have a blot but it's an indirect shot and White has to break anchor to hit. I think the position is level. Making the 5pt, though, leaves your rear checkers potentially vulnerable to being attacked or primed. Plus, you're left with an awkward forward distribution, with 3 ineffective spares on the 6pt, and not many ways to make more blocking points in your outfield. The 5pt has less value than usual when the opponent already has an anchor on your 4pt. I think you're a slight but definite underdog after this play.
