The two options seem to be clearing the 7 or clearing the 9. The 7 bears in two checkers which is good for the gammon race and prevents white from using 7 of her 3s to actually escape (31 32 33 and 34).

Clearing the 9 makes a homeboard point and the gap it creates will often be gone next roll whereas teh gap on the 7 hangs around.

Clearing the 8 seems pointless.

I'll clear the 7 - I think the benefits outweigh those of clering the 9.
