Blue does not need to win any gammons. After playing this 53, he will be up by 4 pips. That makes the race a virtual tie. The problem is that Blue will get squeezed first. He has an extra 10 pips tied up in his anchor that his opponent White does not have locked up in his. That’s the difference between an anchor on the 21pt and one on the 16pt. This is a great time to make a run for it. I would play out to the midpoint, leaving just a single blot. If Blue can make a getaway, it will be White who is tied to his anchor, slowly getting squeezed, while Blue moves freely. Even when White can hit Blue’s straggler, he will quite rightly be reluctant to leave return shots in his home board. Mike
