If you hit and try to contain white and you do not succeed, you will have compromised your forward position by either ruining your timing or having building materials sent back. If you play safe now, you will usually have 11 checkers to build a forward position over the next 4-6 rolls. That ought to be better.

If you want to play your opponent, 13/7* 10/5 is the way to go I think. It makes it more likely that you get a backgame that might be mishandled.
