I can recall doubles events in the past where someone entered with a 3-person team. It's not like there's a huge competitive advantage as long as you only get to play each match with 2 of the 3 people. But I agree that allowing someone to be added after the event has started, on the theory that "hey, we can just say this was the 3rd person," isn't quite right.

Having said that, if I found out that someone of roughly equal skill was swapping in for one of my opponents because they had a work conflict, it's not something I would ever complain about. But if I found out that my upcoming opponent, Abbott & Costello, had suddenly morphed into Stick & Costello, that would be an unwelcome surprise.
