The REAL difference between Intermediate and Open

Phil, Nicely written. You have covered a lot of ground and numerous issues in your post. Who is an interm/adv player? I think it is either someone that does not yet have the confidence to play at the open level or they like the higher equity of staying in the interm/adv. As a past tourn director I was always looking at how a player performed in past tournaments, how many ABT points did they have, had i played them myself as to playing strength. Bill Davis has a committee to decide if players should move up to open or are allowed to stay in interm/adv. Personally , i think BG rules are incomplete. I do think more time should be spent on discussing further upgrades. I would love to see legal moves but am not fully aware of the pluses and minuses of that format. If my opponent asked to play on that basis i would be happy to, is it legal..hmmm As to clocks, length of matches, type of tournament events, etc that a tournament director must decide upon, That should always be left to his personal choice. He is the one investing the time energy and money to stage the event , hopefully in a way for the players benefit. Players attending will vote if they like a tournament and therefore encourage the director to hold further tournies. Last: i believe the difference between Interm/adv and open players IS skill set, understanding of the cube and confidence.
