I agree about defining a proper file format (text) that handles the current generation of bot features. However, since MAT files are prevalent and well understood an interim solution would to be agree on a change (like the one that XG does use) to handle gaps. I also think that if we start doing this that we should dedicate a webpage somewhere that defines MAT files, including the original variant, and any changes to create a new variant that is decided on.
If I were to define a new format from scratch, it would be text based (XML would be my preference for this format). It would be able to handle basic tasks as being able to record all the checker and cube actions as you'd expect, game and match state, player info. I'd also want to take a page from the SGG format and allow for other data to be included such as chat data. Often it is nice to be able to reconstruct not just the match, but real time commentary if it was an online match. Supporting decision annotations would also be part of it.
