Michael, yes, that was indeed for the norms. However, the rules are sort of a preference for the same setup. So if your opponent insists, you cannot self-transcribe the match "live". If your opponent allows, you're good to go, but you cannot submit for a norm.

JDG (and others), backgammon is not chess, and in particular not in this regard. You have a lot of decisions to make in a match (compared to chess), so the flow is an entirely different thing.
