The REAL difference between Intermediate and Open

In Response To: The REAL difference between Intermediate and Open (Tom Keith)

This debate proves my point. Individuals disagree on what should determine who plays where. One tournament director might think John Smith is an open player, and another might let him play in Intermediate. Is that fair to John Smith? Is that fair to the players at each tournament?

Tom doesn't think it matters if a low open player competes in the Intermediate, but what if 5 low open players are playing in intermediate? What if some people believe that some of those 5 are not really that low? Tom may not feel it hurts his winning chances that much to compete against a few extra better players, but many people in the Intermediate division don't feel that way. If you were a tournament director and have seen the reaction of the intermediates any time a "questionable" player was allowed into the intermediates, you would see how much people don't feel the way Tom does about having a little more competition.

If you were a tournament director and saw the reaction of someone who wanted to play intermediate and was forced to play Open, Tom would not believe it's no big deal to let each tournament director make the decision.

I am not saying there should not be some judgement involved and that the tournament director should be taken completely out of the equation...all I am saying is that there should be some guidelines and rules to determine how players should be designated and how and when exceptions should be made so that there is a basic criteria that is not completely subjective.

And I am also saying that this is just one of many areas that is not properly covered or defined on an international or even national basis. That is not good for the players, for the directors, and for the game.

And to those (mostly in charge) who say "if it ain't broke don't fix it" I say, and will continue to say (until it is fixed) that is is broke.
